The Project

Music from the Past is a project created in 2022, born from the desire to explore the dialogue between classical music and contemporary jazz. With a unique approach, Leonardo reinterprets works by composers he loves transforming them into a personal aesthetic that blends tradition and modernity.

Initially conceived as a quartet, the project has undergone various artistic evolutions, primarily exploring the quartet and the sextet configurations, enriched by three voices. This latter setup adds a unique expressive depth, capable of captivating the listener through a wide range of sonic nuances.
 

The Music

The music of Music from the Past is a journey between past and present, embracing influences from European jazz and post-romantic classical music. Leonardo describes this approach as “New Impressionist Jazz,” a sonic exploration that paints musical landscapes with the sensitivity of an impressionist painter, evoking an experience of constant levitation and introspection.
 

The integration of the three voices amplifies the emotional intensity of the project, adding a choral dimension that enhances the reimaginings of iconic works. With a perfect balance between carefully crafted arrangements and improvisation, the project aims to create a bridge between the lyricism of classical music and the freedom of contemporary jazz.

Leonardo's artistic journey is further enriched by completing a Master's in Research at CODARTS in Rotterdam, where he delved into the study of Catalan composer Federico Mompou. This experience led to the upcoming album, scheduled for January 2025, recorded as a sextet with talented Dutch and Italian musicians. Entirely dedicated to Mompou, the album will offer an original reimagining of his works, highlighting Leonardo's impressionistic sensitivity.
 

Among the successes of the project is its selection for the prestigious So What’s Next Festival in Eindhoven, confirming the originality and artistic quality of Music from the Past. With every concert and new recording, the project continues to evolve, taking the audience on a timeless musical journey.
